Certainly an epic Toowong Ashgrove meet at Jack Cook Park this evening where the level of action lifted a lot compared to last year.
Toowong with a fuller team and a bit more consistency proved too good once again for us winning the meet 315 points to 202.
There were some strong wins from our team though including a nail biting Mixed 4 x 400m with Aidan Dallinger, Isla Reid, Olivia Agiannitis and Daniel Casey.
Earlier Isla had also taken the Women’s 100m and Daniel turning the tables on Toowong’s Michael Jackson from last year in the 1500m in an exciting tussle.
Lee Martin took both the Men’s Shot and Discus and Ashleigh Preston the Women’s Discus.
Lyndon Maynard also produced an excellent 1.85m High Jump to just get pipped by Toowong’s Samuel Anderson with 1.90m only one centimetre off the track record.
These days in athletics with social media athletes often feel more compelled to always achieve personal best times and medals than what they used to in the past.
However to me a meet like this that emphasises service and teamwork where you are competing with your club mates against your mates from another club can bring out a level of courage and ensuing self-belief that can really help young people learn about what they are capable of.
To me that’s the true value of the sport to the average punter.
Congratulations to Toowong and a big thanks to all the helpers from both clubs who helped make the meet such a success.
