QLD Athletics Championships 2023 Day 1

Really great to see our athletes lifting for the big occasion at the Queensland Athletics Championships at QE2 last night with Finn O’Keefe a great example fighting his way back from illness and injury issues to record a big PB of 1.57.33 finishing 6th in his Open 800m heat.

Similarly there were other big PBs as well for our other 800m runners Zel Van Loggerenberg and Perry Croft 7th Under 15 800m Final 2.15.42 and Zel Van Loggerenberg 2.22.13 2nd Under 14 800m heat.

There were some excellent medal performances from Lee Martin 1st in the Under 18 Shot Put 15.63m and newcomer Elyjah Sa’u 14.31m in second.

Joel Drew also took Gold with a very controlled race and PB of 54.40 in the Under 18 Boys 400m Hurdles.

Connor Campbell produced an outstanding 2.5 second PB of 27.27 for Silver in the U15 Boys 200m Hurdles.

Laura Bray showed great persistence utilising what on occasions were unusual techniques in the Under 15 2k Steeplechase for a Bronze and first 13 year old in 7.29.38.

Izzy Caminiti was 8th in 32.89 in the Under 16 Girls 200m hurdles and Isaac Ting 7th in U16 Boys 209m Hurdles in 28.75.

Iseoluwah Akosile continued to show promise in Under 16 Shot with 10.15m.

Cristian Kuenzel was 7th in U18 Boys High Jump with 1.75m,.

In the Open Discus, Carl Martin was 5th with a very good 42.41m, Hamish Middleton 7th with 40.82n and Adrian Keen 16th with 33.12m.

A terrific opening night far better than we could have expected so let’s keep up the great work everyone through to Sunday.
